Motown Memories Creative

In 2023, I had the opportunity to design a Supper Club event for Jamul Casino celebrating Black History Month, titled Motown Memories. This project became a milestone for me because it marked my very first exploration into the world of AI-generated art.

I had a specific creative vision in mind—an old-school Apollo Theater-style marquee that captured the golden age of Motown. When I couldn’t find the right assets on traditional stock photo sites, I turned to Midjourney. With some heavy prompting and post-editing, I was able to bring that vision to life in the artwork you see here. While the image isn’t perfect (and looking back now, it’s amazing to see how much AI image generation has advanced since then), it showcased just how powerful AI could be as a tool for composition, ideation, and concepting.

The final creative direction extended beyond the marquee concept. The inside of the invitation was designed to look like the interior of a venue wall plastered with Motown posters, reinforcing the nostalgic concert theme. The event itself was a huge success with a sold-out crowd, and my design work was featured prominently across digital screens, marquee-style posters, and event décor.

This project solidified my perspective on AI in design: it’s not a replacement for creativity, but rather a tool that expands what’s possible. The creative eye of a designer will always be essential, and AI simply adds another brush to the toolkit—one that can spark new directions when traditional resources fall short.
